About the Book

He’s never needed someone until her.
Everett wants her. In bed. On the stairs. Against the fridge. He wants the inexplicable connection they have to deepen and grow. Beyond the bed, he wants to soothe her aches and comfort her, defend her against the evils of the world. But his own world is crumbling around him, and he needs her, too. Needs her kindness and warmth, her strength and comfort. They nearly made it, they almost had everything. Until one misunderstanding derailed it all.

She’s never been needed until him.
Beth’s never been the long-term lover and not by her choice—by theirs. She’s the quick fix and the one-night stand, the one they use and leave. As the curvier version of her identical twin, Beth has always been compared to her—and never favorably. Throw in the rough way she grew up, her cruel mother and never-ending family drama, and no one’s wanted Beth to stick around. Until Everett.

What they had was beautiful and intoxicating and dizzying, and warm and lovely and safe. But it won’t last…not now…not after everything fell apart. Can they ever find a way back to each other?

Read a Scene!

So many responses flitted through his head, but he picked the one that flashed biggest in his head.

He kissed her.

It was like a spark erupting into a flame, setting his entire body on fire. His shopping bag fell from his hand, and he vaguely heard a clunky crash. The hand at her cheek shifted into her hair, the simple ponytail preventing him from burying his hand the way he wanted to. His other hand curled around her and up the curve of her spine to hold the nape of her neck.

Her body stilled in surprise, then yielded to him and her eyes closed.

This connection between them, this need, this…everything seemed to burn even brighter as she gave herself over to him.

He wanted to touch her, really touch her, and let his hands roam down her body, over the curves of her ass to grip her thighs. He wanted to push her against the bakery’s brick wall, the sweet scents from inside a pale comparison to the lovely scent of her in his arms. With her back against the wall, he would grab her thighs, spread her legs, and push her even harder against the brick.

She moaned, in his fantasy and in real life, and he ignored the fantasy for the reality of her standing in front of him. Her hands fisted in his hair, holding him closer, her tongue taunting his to not only get a taste but to take what they both wanted.

They broke apart at the same time, and he vaguely wondered if that was also due to their connection. Knowing when to break and when to yield, knowing when to give and when to take—was it all part of this unshakeable thread between them? Or was a natural chemistry or intuition driving them?

Panting, he kept hold of her head while she did the same to him for a few more moments. Then, she slowly let go of his hair. He hadn’t realized how tight she’d been holding it until he felt the sweet release of her fists and the cool breeze soothing that sting.

He stared into her eyes, that connection absolutely there. He wasn’t imagining it.

It was real, and it was theirs.

Now what the hell were they going to do about it?
